7 March 2007 So much for all those reports of a ‘mild winter’!! Yep, it WAS pretty mild until February. Then, all sorts of cold fronts wreaked all sorts of havoc all over the country. Whether you live in Minnesota, Ohio, New York, Georgia, Texas, the Carolinas, or Florida, we ALL felt Mother Nature turn on the ‘Time for Winter’ switch. For some, power outages, road closures, cancelled fights, and treacherous conditions were some of the results. The further north you lived, the worse it was. Even the northern half of Florida wound up with a short period, or two, of freezing weather. But, the real negative effects for our fishing scene were the never-ending series of one cold front after another, all in rapid succession. From our earlier information to you about the turbid water conditions since the ’04 hurricanes, you know we have had serious problems when the high winds stir up the silt off the bottom of many of the Florida lakes. Our Farm 13/Stick Marsh impoundment is sorely effected when the winds blow, especially those strong winds of passing cold fronts. The rapid succession of repeating fronts in February rarely ever gave the water time to clear sufficiently to provide decent bass fishing. A few days of clean water appeared occasionally, but it was a rare sight. We just completed another three-day session filming both bass and crappie for In-Fisherman TV and only got marginal water conditions (we’ll announce the dates these segments will be broadcast; expect late 2007-early 2008). We managed to catch plenty of fine fish for a crappie program (cinnamon, w/chartreuse tail PERFECT CRAPPIE JIG), but the bass really made us work hard. However, we did get two giant bass on the two days we worked on them. Of the 25 bass we landed, all came on chrome-finish Rattlin’ Raps. EVERY ONE of these fish was hooked in the same, slightly unusual manner. The front treble would be lodged in the corner of the fish’s mouth, while the rear hook would be outside, towards the back of the head. As best we could figure, none of these bass chased the lures in the murky water. It would appear the lure came at them and they tried to take it head first, possibly only nipping at it rather than making a decisive strike. We did note a large number of apparent strikes that resulted in no hook-ups, so our theory might be correct. Who really knows for sure. Someday, I will get to talk to a fish and THEN maybe I will find out why they do what they do!! Due to the poor water, most of the reputable guides have been offering to delay, cancel, or move their fishing trips to Garcia Reservoir when the opportunity to catch Stick Marsh bass was estimated to be low. Garcia has proven to be an excellent fishery, with a tremendous population of healthy, active bass. A normal full-day trip on Garcia normally produces 20-30 bass. But, their average size is below what we get at the Stick Marsh. Where a day on the Stick Marsh would usually give us at least one bass eight pounds, or over. Garcia’s daily estimate for a large fish is more like five to six pounds. What the bass lack in average size, however, is more than made up for by the sheer beauty of Garcia. The towering cypress trees, grass and pad fields, massive reed stands, and unbelievable wildlife make it one of the more esthetic places to visit. An absolutely wonderful place!! Another way to compensate for the poor bass fishing is to transfer your efforts towards the giant Stick Marsh crappie. Plus, other lakes, such as Garcia Reservoir and nearby massive Lake Kissimmee, offer excellent crappie populations. As noted in our fishing reports, we have dropped our number of bass trips significantly, while adding a LOT of crappie trips in their place. Not many area guides offer crappie trips, but we do and we execute them well (you’ll note a few hours fellow guide, Stan Daniel, and I put towards the crappie later in this report). In Garcia, you should concentrate the search for slab crappie in and around the borrow pit in the west-central section of the lake, as well as in the canal that connects Garcia to the Farm 13 spillway. Right now, the crappie are on active spawn, so look for vegetation near the deep waters of the pit and the canal. If there are spawning, they will be IN that vegetation. If they are still pre-spawn, they will be in tight schools in the open water right along the outside of the vegetation. The only way to find a group of actively spawning crappie is to search for them. There is no indicator to look for. So, cover a lot of water rapidly. They will be very protective of their spawning location and will attack most any lure that comes to invade their space. In the Farm 13/Stick Marsh impoundment, expect the spawning crappie to use wooded areas, since the vegetation is almost non-existent. Once the spawning is over (end of March, or so), expect the crappie to school back up and be found in the deeper open water. By the way, our great bass film shot a few weeks ago, at the end of January, will appear on IN-FISHERMAN TV the week of 26 March 2007. Find your station, channel and time at this link on the IN-FISHERMAN web site: www.in-fisherman.com/tv/schedule/tv_schedule/ The Outdoor Channel, the Men’s Outdoors and Recreation (MOR) channel, and some local channels in your area broadcast the week’s program 5-6 times during that period. (NOTE: If you haven’t read the short Tip and seen the pictures on how we improve the hook-up percentage with flukes and soft jerk bait lures, be sure to do so. It may really help your fishing success!! Go here: www.jimporter.org/tipster/tipster115.shtml)

March 13, 2007 Mike with a BIG bass! Bass catching at Stick Marsh and Farm 13 is wonderful! Catching Big Bass is the biggest draw of Stick Marsh and Farm 13. While the numbers of bass caught are less than in the past the large bass are still there and still being caught. Weather is a big key in encouraging the BIG bass to bite. Adjusting to the weather and water conditions at hand is the major key. Mike with the first bass I photoed! I can only write for what my clients and I are producing. When the wind is out of the North fish North. When the wind is out of the South fish South. When the wind is out of the East fish Southeast. When the wind is out of the West fish the Southwest. When the wind is calm fish the South or fish the middle portion of Stick Marsh. This is Brent. Mike was Brent's guest! There are many BIG bass locations that have not been fished this season. There is one BIG bass location that has not been fished in three years. Two bass bit at the same instant - result - a Double! The weather is warming and with it will come increased numbers of bass caught. The water temperature at Stick Marsh and Farm 13 is just above 70. Ideal temperature to produce to numbers and numbers of BIG bass. We went to the Spillway (not running) to catch a bass. Mike did! With the arrival of warm weather I forsee the lake levels lowering. This is a GOOD THING for top water fishing. Maybe, it will be difficult to move the boat around. But, along with difficult boat movement comes some of the most exciting BIG bass topwater action you can imagine - maybe much better than you can imagine. When the water temp goes above 75; when the wind slows for a period of time; AND when the water clears; bring your CHUG BUGS, SPOOKS, FROGS, maybe a BUZZBAIT; and SOFT PLASTICS that skirt across the top and be prepared for the most lively topwater action you have ever experienced! Live bait is the way most folks have been going it at this time. Not everyone wants to use live bait and on some occasions the use of artificials has produced larger numbers of bass than the live bait. Spinnerbaits have produced some very good numbers early in the day. One fisherman reported catching them on tandem willow leaf blades in a shad color. Rattle Trap type lures also produced in the darker colored water when the live bait would not produce. Senko’s fished without a weight, with a weight and any way you can fish them slow have also produced. The key with the Senko type bait is that the lure needs to be the medium size. The seven and eight inch versions seem not to be desired by the bass near as much as the smaller versions. The BIG Senko type lures sure do throw good!! Subject: Garcia, Florida Submitted by Robin Orr (ip 66.56.235.187) Date Fished: 2/7/2007Water Temperature: 61Water Clarity: 2-3 feet Two of us fished Garcia from 4-9February, we wanted to fish the stick marsh too, but the winds, water clarity and the fact that there was no water movement through the spill ways kept us from doing that. Fishing was good at Garcia. Caught 8-10 per day to 18-20 by Friday. Most in the 3-5 lb. range with a couple at 6-7. Used live shiners, zoom frogs, and white zoom flukes. We stayed at Stickmarsh bait&tackle for the week. Pete and Tina were the most wonderful, helpful, and accomidating hosts one could ask for. And some of the locals hanging aroud the shop offered a wealth of knowledge on fishing and the area. If you`re planning a trip to the stickmarsh, I highly reccommend booking through stickmarsh bait&tackle, they have a room that sleeps 4, and there are 2 great restaurants in Fellsmere. Nice report From: Keith (68.207.111.189), Florida Sounds like you caught some good fish there. Hopefully the 6-7lbers are still swimming around in there? I saw a group of guys when I was fishing the tournament there recently keep what they said where several 5's up to 7lbs. All caught on shiners and crankbaits. I reminded him that we are only allowed 1 fish a piece over 22". Thank you so much!!!! From: Tina Heinz (205.188.116.134), Florida Robin thank you so much for the great report it was my pleasure to meet you and hope to see you again here fishin soon !!!! Best fishin Wishes Tina

Submitted by Keith (ip 68.207.111.189) Date Fished: 2/25/2007 Water Temperature: 68 Water Clarity: 2-3 feet I fished the local tournament again Sunday but with much different results. I actually caught 20 bass today and 6 large Pickerels but no bass over 15" where caught by me. I caught them on lipless crank baits in the NW flats. I guess I have sore lipped too many in that section of the lake and need to locate some bigger fish elsewhere :) Some people caught some nice fish today though. The winning weight in the tournament was 18lbs even. Very nice. My weight was only 6.2lbs. I also did a dumb thing and actually culled 1 too many fish leaving me with only 4 fish to weigh in. DOH!!! The extra fish I released only weighed 1.1 lbs so it didn't matter really. Even though I didn't get bigger fish the action of catching 20 bass and 6 pickerels was fun none the less. I caught my fish on lipless crankbaits and 1 on a buzzbait early. It was too windy to fish soft plastics for me at least. Water Level From: Critter Craw (71.207.193.249), Alabama Fish there the last week of Jan and the water was low. Plan to return mid March. How is the water level? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Low From: Keith (68.207.111.189), Florida It is lower now then it was in January. I didn't notice the depth at the ramp so I can't say for sure but it is pretty low. It is navigable but I would not advise running east and west in the north flats. Those levees are just inches below water in most places. There are some areas where you can go through but it is best to run to the north east west canal then run east and west to move around. That is what I do and it is ok. Be careful though as some of the levees run to this canal and there are some high spots even in and around this canal that can be trecherous. I keep praying for rain to help fill this lake back up. Also, that the Fellesmere farms folks would not take anymore water out of it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Specks?? From: Rob (4.224.141.107), Indiana Hey Keith thanks for the reports. I'm comning down at end of March, do they always have a Tournament on Sunday? Also, do they catch any crappie on Garcia? If so, do you know where and what they're biting. Thought of making a bass/crappie trip to Garcia. thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tournaments From: Keith (68.207.111.189), Florida Rob, they have a tournament every Sunday starting at safe light. Entry fee is $25. Weigh in is at 1pm. They absolutely have Specks in Garcia. Although, I never fish for them. I am strictly bass. I see guys catching them typically more in December and January. I am sure that Middleton's bait and tackle can help you with location etc. They are in Fellsmere. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lake Location From: Curt (64.12.116.136), Florida Hey Guys Can you tell where this lake is located? Live in Sarasota and have read alot about this place and might want to give it a try Thanks Curt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Click here to enter a remark. Gives us a call to get you trip today 772-571-9855 Tina
